This special seminar will be taught in conjunction with the International Kodály Society 23rd Symposium to be held in Camrose, Alberta during August 8-13, 2017. Teachers and graduate students planning to attend the conference may register at the University of Alberta to participate in this 3 credit course alongside the conference in order to have the opportunity to:

-Learn international singing games and vocal/choral repertoire for elementary and secondary students

-Explore resources and teaching materials and strategies for developing singing skills, reading skills and musical understanding in children

-Increase personal musicianship and pedagogic skills, and

-Reflect upon and discuss contemporary perspectives on using 21st century Kodály approaches to teach children music.

Participation in one face-to face class before (July 8, 1 pm) and one electronic forum discussion after the symposium is required as well as completion of a reflection paper and action plan regarding ideas gleaned from conference presentations and the participant’s  current classroom practice. Activities in this course will help K-12 teachers gain new skills, understandings and lenses through which to innovate, interpret, and lead in Kodály inspired music education.

More than 75% of the sessions at the Symposium are workshops led by internationally renowned pedagogues including Jill Trinka, Susan Brumfield, James Cuskelly, László Nemes and many more.  Singing games sessions will feature repertoire from Scotland, Malaysia, the Caribbean (with Steel drum ensemble), the US and Australia.

NOTE:  Qualified undergraduates be eligible to take this course upon approval of the instructor.

Registration for the Kodaly International Symposium is also required. See  AND for more information.
